Courses on White Supremacy: Frequently Asked Questions

This Summer, PUGS is offering multiple ways for Portlanders to learn about, recognize, and challenge their place in our white supremacist culture. Two courses - Interrogating Whiteness and White Supremacy in Oregon will give participants a place to start.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about them:-

Where is a good place to start learning about white supremacy?

Both courses have a primer about how whiteness was constructed and how white colonialism has oppressed people of color - individually and systemically - in the past and today. Each course has additional readings and opportunities for discussion and reflection.

How are the courses different?

They are different in both content and approach. White Supremacy in Oregon gives a detailed history of how our state has marginalized non-white residents, especially Black communities, since its inception. Interrogating Whiteness takes a more national view, and explores white supremacy through writings by people of color. Read Interrogating Whiteness instructor Sarah DeYoreo’s blog about how she chose the format for her course.

Who are the instructors?

The instructors are both white women with experience teaching their specialties, both at PUGS and other education institutions. DeYoreo was inspired to create her course after taking the course that became White Supremacy in Oregon at PUGS!

Can I take both courses?

Absolutely! Many participants have found that attending both helped them get the facts and also resources to see their world through the eyes of people of color.

What if I have more questions?
