Unlocking the Wisdom of Yoga

Taught by Judith Sugg, PhD

Tuesdays, June 7 - 28.  7:00 - 9:00 pm.
Location: Social Justice Action Center, 400 SE 12th Ave
Four weeks, $91. Space is limited to 20 students.

What does yoga have to do with the mind? How does it impact our behavior, our thoughts, and our feelings? Much of what the West is now discovering in psychology was written about 2000 years ago  in the Yoga Sutras. The wisdom is more applicable than ever to our stressful times and lives today.

The class is interactive. We will apply what we learn from the text to our lives: how we think, how we resolve conflict, how we discover our real selves.

Week 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE BREADTH OF YOGA.
What is yoga?  We'll go over the history of yoga, key texts, basic terminology and Sanskrit, and different schools, systems, and goals of yoga.

Week 2: YOGA SUTRAS I - YOGA AS A PRACTICE.
We'll go over current medical and psychological research relating to mindfulness and talk about practical ways to apply it to your life.

Week 3:  YOGA SUTRAS II - THE PRACTICE FOR THE SERIOUS.
We'll define the eight limbs of yoga and their unique applications.

Week 4:  MESSAGE OF THE GITA.
For our final class, we'll dive into the accomplishments and the power that can come from yoga and how we can move toward them. Students will also have a chance to bring special interest topics to discuss.
