Breaking Free From Oppressive Normativity (May 2018)

In this course, we will identify the systems that constrain us and learn how to use them to our advantage. We will start by untangling our lives from the status quo's horde of Shoulds and begin tapping into our hidden Coulds. What could we do if we didn't spend so much time, energy, money, and resources on what we should do?

You will find the inner authority to become exactly who you want to be, and you'll learn how to do it your way. Results will vary! This course is about self-discovery, which is authentic and unpredictable and different for every person. In the end, it aims to empower the seeker and revolutionary in each of us.

Week 1: Finding Your Own Dream. "The biggest danger is not failing to achieve the American Dream. The biggest danger is achieving a dream that you don't actually believe in" - Courtney Martin. We're going to begin by inspecting our dreams and asking where they've failed us and how to dream truer, better dreams. We'll examine how everyday life functions and identify why and where it doesn't work for so many of us.

Week 2: Unleashing Your Freedom. Once we've begun unsticking our stuckness, we can begin realizing our better dreams. We're going to take the rules we've learned and begin breaking them in beautiful, purposeful ways. That will allow us to redirect the energy we've been wasting on systems not designed for us towards aims we actually intend and desire.

Week 3: Collective Liberation. "Until all are free, none are free" - MLK.  Freeing ourselves is only the start. At the wellspring of real creation is a deep and active love of self, in service of a deep love for all. Ever tried to see yourself without a mirror? Ever tried to know yourself without the honest feedback of another or through the natural relations and rhythms of community? Perhaps paradoxically, we each need other to become truly free.

Week 4: A Start, Not a Conclusion. How do we keep growing in our practice and pursuit of freedom? What tools can we apply in the moment, and over time, that will illuminate our blind spots? And what resources can keep us aware of how we might be limiting ourselves? We will conclude our time trying to ensure that we all feel confident continuing our quest for expanding freedom and discovery.
